Intent 
At Sundridge & Brasted we believe that art offers children the opportunity to explore their unique gifts and talents.  Through art they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning to respect and make links with a wide spectrum of different types of art in our society. Art contributes to children’s understanding of theirs and others uniqueness and personal development and creativity. Art  intrinsically values an individual’s voice and perspective and children grow in their understanding of this and their own ability to express their personal ideas, views and thoughts and the value in this. At Sundridge & Brasted we give thanks every day for the world God has given us and celebrate the beauty we see all around us. Through art we are able to continue to cultivate the children’s natural sense of wonder and curiosity that they experience and encourage them to explore their special place within Gods world. Understanding that they can make a positive impact through their own actions and ideas links with strongly with our Christian values and our aim to act as ‘lights of the world’.  

The focus is in developing proficiency in drawing, painting, understanding colour and shade and sculpture, with the overall aim of enhancing their own unique understanding of these disciplines, thus fostering a critical awareness and appreciation of a range of art and design. We support children to flourish by cultivating their God given gifts in art and to then express and explore their own uniqueness and celebrate this through their work. 

The art curriculum will advance children’s critical abilities and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of male and female artists and designers throughout history. Again celebrating theirs and others uniqueness, talents and views. 

Implementation 

Children will extend their understanding of the visual language of art with effective teaching and a carefully thought out sequences of lessons and experiences. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) will be developed by providing an accessible and engaging curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential and flourish as artists.
