At Sundridge & Brasted, reading is at the heart of all we do. We believe that for children to develop a love of learning they must first develop a love of reading. We ensure that children are able to listen to and read high quality texts every day and our curriculum is designed to fully immerse children into a story as their learning journey for the term continues.
At Sundridge and Brasted, we use the online platform, Accelerated Reader, to monitor and assess children’s reading. Pupils begin by taking a test at the beginning of each academic year. This gives a score of their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) which corresponds to a book level. We repeat these tests three more times throughout the year in order to monitor their progress in reading. Once they have received their book level, children are helped to pick out a suitable book that not only matches their ability, but also engages them.
Each time a child finishes reading a book at home or at school, they are able to take an online comprehension quiz on the book, in order to earn points.
Children can access the quizzes by going to
https://ukhosted91.renlearn.co.uk/6713358/ and logging on. You will be able to see how many books your child has read, as well as monitoring how many points they are building up.
At school, we love reading and it is one of the most important parts of our day. No matter what else happens, we always make sure that we have at least twenty minutes of uninterrupted reading each day. Readers’ Workshop typically lasts one hour and consists of a teacher led session, followed by quiet reading. During this time, teachers come around and listen to children read as well as asking them questions about the text. The skills we look at are: Inference, Developing Schema, Visualising, Summarising and Questioning. Through these skills, children are taught how to fully engage with a text, which allows their love of reading to flourish.
We are incredibly proud of our gorgeous, well resourced library. Our library is full of books that are part of the Accelerated Reader system that are suitable for all children from Reception right the way through to Year 6.
We also have a wide variety of non fiction texts that are borrowed by classes through out the year to help with topic based research.
We have also recently opened an account with Sevenoaks Library and are really excited to see what lovely books we can borrow over the coming year.
